What Is The Definition Of Web Hosting
By Elijah James
Just about everyone wants to have their own website these days. The problem with this is just as many people don’t know how to host their own website. If everyone on earth understood the complexities of DNS Hosting and Mail Daemons then there would not be a need for hosting companies. Fortunately for said companies, most people are ignorant of how to create such servers, so their money remains safe and their servers intact. But what exactly in involved in hosting a domain and maintaining a website? Indeed, what exactly is the definition of web hosting?

When someone decides they want to have website, there are a few things they need to do. The first and most important thing of course is they have to create their content. Content can be created using web design programs such as FrontPage, Xara, or even notepad if they are so inclined. Once the initial creation is over with they then have to worry about a domain name. Domain names may be purchased and registered for a small fee, and usually that fee is around $20 per year. Not really a high cost for owning your own website. The next thing of course, is finding a web host.

The definition of web hosting is basically a server that can hold your website. Your site is stored on the hard drive of a large server. The server will be running software that makes your website available to the entire world so long as they are allowed to view it in their country. You should also keep in mind that some educational institutions like to block websites that they deem

inappropriate, whether the site is actually inappropriate or not.

Depending on how much you pay for your web hosting, your site may be hosted on a hard drive with several more websites owned by other clients, or it might be on its own separate server. Generally these servers are UNIX or Linux based and you are given two options for accessing them. One way might be through an FTP interface. For this you can use Internet Explorer or you favorite browser, though to get better access to the folder you are advised to either purchase or download a better FTP program. The other option you may be presented with, is the use of a shell. This is a text based interface that allows you to use a command console to manipulate the contents of the website. It may be a little harder to operate, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes a lot easier, and it may even be more efficient.

The definition of web hosting is exactly what it sounds like; someone who hosts your website. You will of course have to pay a fee for this unless you choose to host your own website. If you can host the website on your own, then you have a lot of different pieces of software to choose from. Windows Server2003 even has such options built in, and they are very easy to set up. The only thing you’ll have to worry about is port forwarding, and if you know how to set up a server then port forwarding will be no problem for you. You could also look into Small HTTP Server, which has been around for many years and is by far the easiest to use.
